Indonesian

P-Grade 6 students have had a positive start to Indonesian this year and in term 2 will begin to integrate Indonesian into their daily class routines such as the morning/ afternoon role with their classroom teacher.

In Indonesian class, students continue to exchange greetings and information about themselves, family and interests through guided group activities such as games, songs, role play as well as shared reading of Indonesian texts in order to create their own captions, simple sentences or texts.
This term, the students will continue to revise and consolidate language and skills from Term 1 as well as focusing upon the following topics:

  • In Prep, students will revise numbers 0-5, basic colours and greetings and be able to share information about themselves such as their name and where they live. Students will also look at Komodo dragons.
  • In Grade 1, students will focus on the topic of animals and pets, counting, classroom objects and learn a song about an Indonesian animal.
  • In Grade 2, students will focus upon describing pets using adjectives such as colour and size, describing what pets eat and drink in order to create a shared book of pets. Students will also learn about an endangered Indonesian animal.
  • In Grade 3 and 4, students will compare their daily routine to that of a typical Indonesian child and learn basic verbs to create their own sentences. Students will use numbers to tell the time and be able to complete a storyboard about their typical day. Students will also label body parts and look at traditional clothing.
  • In Grade 5 and 6, students will look at traditional Indonesian food and through role play, be able to take and make orders in a restaurant, identify various types of traditional food and drink, use numbers to calculate prices as well as looking at Indonesian recipes.

Music

In Prep and Junior Music we have been learning how to read music using the solfa scale. Each note in the scale has a character name and story to help us remember it. We have been concentrating on singing and listening, and we have been playing games which practice these skills. In term 2 we will continue this learning and start to play instruments using our music reading skills.

Grades 3 and 4 have been becoming familiar with the music “app” GarageBand on their Ipads. This puts a mini “recording studio” into the hands of students, and allows them to explore composition, arrangement and recording in class, as well as being able to continue this exploration at home. In term 2 we will be playing more “live instruments” and composing our own “four chord” songs.

Grades 5 and 6 have been practising playing music together whilst working in groups, looking at different musical genres, and learning basic guitar skills. They have displayed skills of communication, cooperation and organisation in their rehearsal and are developing processes which they will use in term 2 in their band and performance work.

Art

This Term Newsletter will provide you with information about your children’s upcoming teaching and learning experiences in the new term.

There is also plenty of additional information provided via Compass throughout the school year, so please make a point of touching base regularly.

In Art this term, classes are extremely busy with threads and textiles, collage and printing. Have you taken a walk down our gallery and the main corridor with your child lately? Take a look, we have many creative, hidden talented students in our school, of which I am proud of them all.
Parents, please it is imperative your child has an art smock at school please (everyone from 1 to grade 6)—many students do not have one and since we are working with paint, it is unlikely they will stay clean, so make sure a named Art smock gets to your child’s teacher.
This term, Grade Prep – 2 students are learning construction and collage techniques. There will be lots of sculptures being built. Grade 3 -5 are learning embroidery and weaving skills and creating some exciting projects and Grade 6 will be involved in creating a poster for the International Peace Poster Competition. Please don’t hesitate to come and see your child’s teacher if you have any questions, we are only too happy to help. Please bring in a box of tissues for the specialist programs – coming onto the colder season children need tissues and the specialist areas are often forgotten about. Just drop them into the Art room and I will distribute them around to all the specialist areas.
Hope to see you around.

PE

In Term 2 there are a few major events on for sport which you can find in the compass calendar. The main one being the grade 3-6 House Athletics day on Friday June 11th. Please let Mr Davis know if you are able to help with Marshalling duties for this event. Please ensure permission note and any money is completed on Compass before the due date (these will come out early term 2).

The PE Curriculum for all areas will continue to focus on participation to each individual’s best ability.
In the prep area, this will continue through skill based stations and modified PMP program. The grade 1 and 2 students will also develop their skills with group work and some minor games of soccer, basketball and tag games.

Grade 3 and 4 students will focus on Australian Rules Football and soccer as well as some Fundamental Motor skills stations. They will also participate in the beep test focusing on their personal best.
Grade 5 and 6 students will prepare for their upcoming interschool sport competition. Golf, Volley Stars, Teeball and Australian Rules Football will be covered this term for these year levels. They will also participate in the beep test focusing on their personal best.

There will also be a number of extra clinics organised throughout the term for various year levels at no cost. Please contact us if you have any questions throughout the term.

General
Our Term 2 Prep Curriculum Newsletter will provide you with information about your child’s upcoming teaching and learning experiences in the new term. There is also plenty of additional information provided via Compass throughout the term, so please make a point to check this regularly.
Students should be proud of the way they have conducted themselves during Term 1, and the return to school after the holidays will be no different. To continue building your child’s independence and self-management skills, we encourage you to support your child to do such things as walk to and enter their classroom by themselves of a morning, carry their own school bag and belongings, know how to tie their shoelaces if wearing lace up shoes, and take on/off their jumper.

We look forward to sharing another exciting term of learning with your child, as well as continuing to work in partnership with you to support your child’s growth and development during their Prep year.

Communication
Your child’s classroom teacher is your first port of call if you have any questions or concerns you would like to discuss.

Compass email is the most effective way to contact your child’s teacher, as the beginning and end of the school day involve preparation, organisation and meetings for all staff and your child’s teacher may not always be available at these times. Teachers will respond to emails within 3 working days, between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. If you would like to talk privately to your child’s teacher about any issues, we welcome you to arrange a time to do so by emailing them on Compass or phoning the school office and leaving a message.

If you require support with accessing or using Compass in any way, please stop by the office and our admin team will be more than happy to help you.

Literacy
We are in for another exciting term of Reading! All students have excitedly chosen books for their individual desktop libraries, which they read during independent reading time each day. We will take this a step further in Term 2 by exploring “Just Right” books; that is, books that are at a good level for us to practise our reading skills. Students will look at the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction books, and explore how they each have a different purpose. This will lead into discussions around what is ‘real’ and ‘imagined’ when reading. We will continue to explore our “Reader’s Toolbelt” of strategies to support us to solve unknown words, such as: using the picture, pointing to each word as we read, using the first and last sound of the word, looking through the whole word before making an attempt and continually asking ‘Does that make sense?’ and if it doesn’t, going back and re-reading.

In Writing, students will continue to be authors by creating their own texts that they will then get to share with others. We will begin to explore the Writing Cycle, and how authors develop ‘Seed Ideas’ to help them write. This will involve students decorating their own “Writer’s Notebook” which will be the place they collect and sketch their ideas before writing about them. We will continue to build on the skills we have learnt in Term 1, such as drawing detailed pictures to share a message, labelling parts of that picture, and writing words to match the picture. We will extend this learning by exploring the conventions of a sentence, such as having spaces between words, a full stop at the end and a capital letter to start, and continue reinforcing that we write from the left to the right of the page, just like when we read.

Across both Reading and Writing, students will continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of the letter names and the most common sounds they make, so that they can draw on this skill as a strategy for both reading and writing words.

Numeracy
In Term 2, students will continue to build on and consolidate their number knowledge to 12. They will engage in a range of hands on and open activities to ensure they are confident in their ‘Number Sense’ around these numbers. Students will explore different ways to make these numbers using a range of different materials, continue to develop their counting fluency from 0 to 12 from any starting point, identify ordinal numbers in a collection (E.G. first, second, third) and build confidence in knowing the numbers before and after a given number. Learning how to form numbers correctly when writing them will also be a focus.

In the area of Measurement and Geometry, students will explore the length of different objects and will compare objects to determine which is longer or shorter, as well as describe the position and movement of objects using such language as next to’, ‘under’, ‘above’ and ‘between’.
In Statistics and Probability, we will look at answering questions to gather information and organising the answers we get into an easy to read picture display. Students will then be able to look at the picture display to interpret the answers.

Inquiry
Our Term 2 Inquiry focus is “Healthy Bodies”, where students will focus on all the different ways they can stay healthy and safe, and look after their bodies. We will explore ways we can be healthy through the food we eat, the amount of sleep we get, by practising good personal hygiene, and exercising regularly. We will then move into exploring how we can stay safe in our environment, by looking at ways we can be safe when outside, near water, on the roads and online.

In addition to this, we will continue to focus on our Play Is The Way social and emotional curriculum, by engaging in weekly community circles around different Life Raft topics, learning to make strong choices and build resilience through different games and activities, and use our Play Is The Way language in everyday conversations. Students will work on “Being Their Own Boss” and making “Strong Choices” to support them in developing as a learner. They will continue to develop their resilience by “Being Brave” when trying new things, and “Pursuing Their Personal Best” when doing so.

Reminders
Home Reading: Students are expected to read for 10 minutes per night, 4 nights per week and record a short comment in their reading diary about the book they have read. Teachers will check reading diaries regularly. Students need to bring their satchel to school each day, so that they are able to swap their home readers each day.

Canteen and Food Sharing: We encourage Prep students to only bring a GOLD COIN to spend at the canteen for over the counter sales. Students are NOT permitted to buy food for other students, have other students purchase food for them, or share food of any kind.

Label Clothes and Belongings: Please ensure ALL items (jumpers, hats, lunch containers, water bottles, etc) are clearly labelled with your child’s name and grade. If these items are misplaced, they are easier to return if they are named. Any unnamed items will be taken to lost property.

Hats: Until April 30th, our SunSmart ‘No Hat, No Play’ policy is in force. As such, your child’s hat is kept safely in their classroom to ensure they are able to play outside during Term 1. If your child requires a hat for TheirCare, we encourage them to keep a second hat in their bag for this purpose, so their school hat remains safely at school for use during the day.

Classroom Donations: We would appreciate any donations of tissues, hand sanitiser, and paper towel.

General
Welcome back to Term 2 to the Grade 1 Department of 2021! The students have made a great start to Grade 1 and have settled into their classes well. We have now set up classroom routines and expectations. Together with the classroom teacher, students are developing an understanding of the different ways that they like to learn through completing a range of activities. They have also begun to recognise and respect differences within their classroom as students build relationships with one another and understand themselves as learners. Throughout the term we will incorporate Play is The Way games and Community Circles to immerse students in team building and problem solving activities to encourage a safe, productive and harmonious community.

This year we have 5 Grade 1 classes. The classroom teachers in Term 2 are Mrs Samantha Boyd grade sharing with Mrs Jess Millard (1KM). We wish Mrs Kelson all the best for the arrival of her new little one. Mrs Boyd is returning from Family Leave and will take Mrs Kelson’s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday teaching days. Mrs Boyd is known to our students as she has taught here for four years, including 2020 in Preps. Other staff are Mrs Chelsea Bevan (1CB), Mr Gregory Quirk (1GQ), Ms Allison Scrivener (1AS), Mr Stephen Hargreaves (1SH) who is our Team Leader for 2021. Mrs Tripolino will be working in Grade 1SH for some part of each day. We look forward to another term engaging and teaching with your child.

Literacy
This term we rotate our texts for our classroom libraries and continue our independent reading. Each classroom has a stylish, student created library for your children to select the books of their choice for their learning.

An important part of the literacy success of your child is to be supported at home and this can be done through weekly home reading. Reading aloud to your child can be one of your best parenting experiences! We hope that you and your child create many loving memories as you explore children's books together over the coming year.

The reading patterns you establish at home directly influence your child’s ability to do well in school. One of our major goals this year in Grade 1 is to help your child grow further as a reader. You have a big role to play in achieving this. The best way for your children to grow as readers is for them to read daily. At Lara Lake Primary School, we are very proud of the progress that our children make with their Literacy learning. With the support that we as teachers give in the classroom and the support that you provide at home, each child progresses at their own rate and we celebrate each achievement that is made.
This year there will be a strong focus on the Writing Workshop. Student choice and ownership of their own writing is often foregrounded in the Writing Workshop. Responsibility lies with the students as they plan, draft, revise and publish. The teacher scaffolds and models the writing process. The students keep a Writer’s Notebook to record their ideas and thoughts as they progress through the stages of writing. The application of the genres would depend on what the students chooses to write about.
Numeracy
In Numeracy this term, students will be focusing on addition and subtraction including money. We will also look at addition in the use of the commutative laws which say we can swap numbers over and still get the same answer. The students will explore doubles and near doubles and location. They will work giving directions. The students will engage in open tasks around 2D shapes using hands on materials and also length. There will also be a focus on chance to identify outcomes of familiar events involving chance and describe them using everyday language such as ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’ or ‘might happen’. Families can support at home by playing games involving counting and number facts, and providing opportunities for your children to explore real life mathematics.

Inquiry
The integrated Inquiry topic this term is ‘My Place in Australia’. Throughout this unit, students will embrace themselves as individuals by sharing their interests. They will also learn more about Australia and the different communities that they belong to. Students will spend time exploring our Indigenous culture, Dreamtime stories and Indigenous art. There will be an excursion this term to fit in with our Inquiry unit of work.

Reminders
A reminder that Department of Education policy stipulates that phones, watches or other devices with communicative ability cannot be carried by students while on the school premises during school hours, without Principal approval. For further details please refer to the policy documents on Compass and the Lara Lake PS website.

Parent Helpers on Excursions

Just a reminder that if you are wishing to volunteer to assist on Grade 1 excursions, parents are now required to have a Working with Children Check. If unsure, check with the office to see what this entails.
Book Pouches/satchels

Please support your child to bring their Book Pouch and reading material to school.
Drink Bottles
Please ensure your child has a water bottle each day with their name clearly labelled.

General
WELCOME BACK EVERYONE! We hope you have all enjoyed a safe and happy Easter over the holidays! With our children engaged in new and exciting learning throughout Term One, time has simply flown by! The Grade Two team has enjoyed getting to know your children over the past ten weeks and watching them grow! With Term Two upon us, we are ready for another fantastic term of learning!

With so many new and exciting things to learn in Term Two, it can be understandable that some children can feel a little overwhelmed at times. To counter this, the students and teachers at Lara Lake follow the six ‘Life Raft’ ideals of our Play is the Way program. In particular, when students feel overwhelmed by new learning, we ask them to “Be brave! Participate to progress.” School is about stepping bravely into the unknown. The unknown is often uncomfortable. Nobody expects you to know everything. That is why we are at school. But the braver you are, the more you learn!

Reading
Students have been relishing in the opportunity to enjoy a range of exciting and engaging books from our classroom libraries. An ongoing focus for students in Term Two will be our development of using ‘fix-up’ and comprehension strategies to make meaning in texts. Independent Reading will occur daily and involve students engaging with texts for at least 30 minutes per day. Conferences and reading group lessons will continue across the term, allowing students to build on their knowledge and application of the strategies and their own personal goals. The homework expectation for Grade Two students is for them to read at least 10 minutes per night for at least 4 nights a week. Their reading should be recorded in their yellow logbook. We ask that students remember to bring their home reading satchels each day.

Writing
In Writing, it has been wonderful watching our students establish clear writing routines and develop into enthusiastic authors. In Term Two, students will continue to work through the ‘Writing Cycle’ which includes: generating seed ideas, choosing an idea, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.

Students will continue to use their Writer’s Notebook to collect ‘Seed Ideas’ which are designed to stimulate their imaginations and inspire them to write. This term, we are working to develop more detailed picture plans to assist with adding detail to each piece we draft. We will also explore a variety of different text types as well as investigate new vocabulary and spelling strategies. Of course, students will also have daily opportunities to engage in Independent Writing. We are looking forward to celebrating the wonderful writing that will be produced throughout the term!

Maths
For Mathematics in Term Two, students will learn to recognise, model, represent and order numbers up to 1000. They will experiment with different ways of representing numbers and practice identifying patterns which go beyond 100. They will learn to count and order small collections of Australian coins and notes according to their value. Students will count collections of coins or notes to make up a particular value, such as that shown on a price tag. Students will explore the connection between addition and subtraction. They will solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of efficient mental and written strategies. They will tell time to the quarter-hour, using the language of 'past' and 'to', as well as use a calendar to identify the date and determine the number of days in each month.

Inquiry
This term’s Inquiry unit is called ‘Then and Now’. In order to develop their knowledge and understanding of how ‘family life’ has changed over the years, students will be comparing the past to the present. They will explore how changing social norms, technology and exposure to other cultures has influenced their everyday lives. Students will be exploring the history of Lara and its surrounding areas, and reflecting on why these histories are important to our identity. Students will also be given the opportunity to explore their personal and family histories with a focus on family structures and how these may have changed, or remained the same over time.

Grade 3 Term 2 Curriculum News 2021

This Term Newsletter will provide you with information about your children’s upcoming teaching and learning experiences in the new term. To find out what other year levels are doing, please refer to the school’s website. There is also plenty of additional information provided via Compass throughout the school year, so please make a point of touching base regularly.

GENERAL

Can you believe it is Term Two already? The Grade 3s have been working hard in Term One and are doing a fantastic job at developing their independence and resilience. We have appreciated the support parents & guardians have given students in order to encourage this with their children as well. We ask for this continued support in Term Two to ensure students are completing a minimum of 80 minutes of home reading and 40 minutes of Maths each week, then also handing homework tasks in on time. We greatly appreciate the donation of tissues to our classrooms and if your child is yet to bring in a box, we would appreciate this donation at the start of Term Two.

LITERACY

This term, we will be developing the student’s comprehension strategies of predicting, activating prior knowledge, determining importance to summarise, making connections, critiquing, analysing, synthesising, questioning, visualising and inferring. We will continue to emphasise the importance of selecting ‘Just Right’ books to enable them to practice these strategies. Their Reading Journals will continue to serve as a tool to track their individual goals and daily reading, while the Reading Response section will enable students to provide evidence of how they are working on our class learning focus.

When reading a new book, encourage your child to make predictions before, during and after reading.

Check their reading comprehension by asking them to visualise and describe the setting, characters or their actions.

Encourage your child to point out unknown words. Encourage them to read around the word, or use text clues to figure out its meaning.

Support your child to ask questions about the text and author.

Encourage them to summarise or retell what has occurred in the book.

Encourage your child to read a balance of fiction and non-fiction.

Discuss the characters. Ask who was their favourite? Why?

Ask them whether they enjoyed the book.

DID YOU KNOW that a child who reads for 67.3 minutes a day will read a total of 4,733,000 words a year? This puts them in the 98th percentile rank! This includes any form of reading such as signs, books, notes etc. Whilst we do not expect Grade Three students to read for this amount of time, clearly the more they read, the better they will get!

In Writing, the students will continue to explore the Writer’s Workshop. We will continue to emphasise the importance of using our Writer’s Notebooks to develop and stretch our ideas. Students will also begin to explore the 6+1 Traits of Writing which includes organisation, voice, word choice, fluency, conventions, ideas and presentation. We will explore how authors use these to ensure their writing makes sense and interests their target audience. We encourage students to find authentic purposes for their writing and would appreciate parents supporting these endeavors at home as well.

A reminder that the following resources are available for home reading support:

Epic: https://www.getepic.com/ Your child’s teacher will have sent home your class Epic code.

Sunshine online – Username: LLPS3212 Password: LLPS3212

NUMERACY

In Mathematics this term, the children will learn about a range of concepts, skills and strategies with a specific focus on Measurement. They will also continue to focus on recalling basic number facts quickly and accurately (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). It would be appreciated if you could help your child to learn these facts at home in addition to their homework. Families can also support at home by encouraging your child to play games involving counting and number facts.

A reminder that the following resources are available for home reading support:

Hit the Button: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Essential Assessment: https://www.essentialassessment.com.au/ Your child’s teacher will have sent home the log in details for this, if it has been misplaced, please email your child’s teacher.

INQUIRY

During Term 2, students in Grade 3 will be working collaboratively on our topic, ‘The Arrival’. As part of this unit, students will:

  • Identify and explain the causes and effects of European settlement and exploration
  • Investigate stories of the First Fleet, including causes and reasons for the journey, who travelled to Australia, and their experiences and perspectives following arrival.
  • The nature of contact between Aboriginal peoples, and the effects of these interactions

DEVICES

A reminder that Department of Education policy stipulates that phones, watches or other devices with communicative ability cannot be carried by students while on the school premises during school hours, without Principal approval. For further details please refer to the policy documents on Compass and the Lara Lake PS website.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing will occur in Week Four on the 11th, 12th, and 13th of May.

We look forward to continuing the connection between school and home in Term Two. Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Compass continues to be our main form of communication. Alternatively, you can contact the office directly for more urgent matters. We ask that if you need to speak with your child’s teacher, that you organise a phone call at a mutually appropriate time. The team will endeavour to reply to any queries as soon as possible.

General
Well done on a fabulous start to the year, Grade Four. We hope you all enjoy a safe and happy Easter over the holidays! With our children engaged in new and exciting learning throughout Term One, time has simply flown by! The Grade Four team has enjoyed getting to know your children over the past ten weeks and watching them grow! With Term Two upon us, we are ready for another fantastic term of learning!

Literacy
During Term 1, students worked together and did a fantastic job of setting up their classroom libraries. Teachers are highly impressed with the way the Grade 4 students are utilising their classroom libraries to ensure they are reading exciting texts that are ‘Just Right’ for them. In Term 2, students will be practising a range of reading comprehension skills including predicting, clarifying, questioning, inferring, visualising and summarising. Alongside their regular Independent Reading, students will be partaking in Guided Reading sessions to better target their areas of need. Please note that some of the texts used during these sessions will be sourced from Epic! Online, so please make sure that your son or daughter’s iPad is charged, updated (if necessary) and brought to school each day.

In Writing, teachers have been pleased to see the wonderful way in which students are using their Writers’ Notebooks to write in a range of genres, and the way they are taking risks to experiment using new vocabulary. Students have been recording new and interesting words in their Wonderful Words book to be used later in their writing. You can support your child by using new words in conversations and discussing their meaning. This term, students will be writing narratives, biographies, information reports and scripts to support their Inquiry topic of ‘Early Explorers’.

Mathematics
Students have a higher chance of being engaged and successful in Mathematics if the content we teach is linked to real-life problems.

In Term Two, students will continue to develop their understanding of the Four Processes (+, -, x, ÷). Students will be encouraged to use a variety of problem solving strategies to efficiently and effectively solve a wide range of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems through engaging hands-on tasks, games and real-world written problems. This term, students will also be focusing on measurement, area and perimeter, angles, as well as 2D and 3D shapes.

Inquiry
Our Term 2 Inquiry unit is ‘Early Explorers’. It involves students researching and presenting historical information based on ‘the journeys of a significant world navigator, explorer or trader up to the late eighteenth century, including their contacts with and effects on other societies’ (Victorian Curriculum). The Grade Four students will be involved in developing their research skills, writing a biography on a world explorer, developing their geographical knowledge of the major continents and bodies of water in the world and creating a script to teach others about their explorer.

IPads
iPads are an essential learning tool in Grade 4, and we remind all students to bring their iPad to school fully charged every day. Teachers have set up their new Google Classroom and students will start to receive digital copies of worksheets as well as the option to complete tasks digitally.

Devices
A reminder that Department of Education policy stipulates that phones, watches or other devices with communicative ability cannot be carried by students while on the school premises during school hours, without Principal approval. For further details please refer to the policy documents on Compass and the Lara Lake PS website.

Homework
Homework is handed in to the classroom teacher every Thursday and the expectations are that our students are reading every night as well as completing self-selected maths tasks (Essential Assessment, Sunshine Online, and Sunset). Grade Four Curriculum Newsletter Term 2 2021

This Term Newsletter will provide you with information about your children’s upcoming teaching and learning experiences in the new term. There is also plenty of additional information provided via Compass throughout the school year, so please make a point of touching base regularly.

Should you be experiencing any difficulties, please do not hesitate to send a handwritten note through to the classroom teacher or send an email via the Compass app.

Grade 6 Term 2 Curriculum News 2021

Grade 6 Term 2 Curriculum News 2021

Grade 6 Term 2 Curriculum Newsletter, 2021

This Term Newsletter will provide you with information about your children’s upcoming teaching and learning experiences in the new term.

There is also plenty of additional information provided via Compass throughout the school year, so please make a point of touching base regularly.

GENERAL
Welcome back to another exciting term! We hope everyone had a happy and safe Easter break with their families, friends and loved ones. The Grade 6 Department has made a great start to the year, with students getting to know a wider group of peers, in both a social and academic setting. This was further encouraged by a fantastic camp at Kangaroobie. Students had an opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zones, develop their resilience and organisation skills, and support their peers in a range of activities.

Both students and teachers have settled into our new routines and structures, and some impressive learning is occurring. We are encouraging students to continue to develop their ability to be active and honest learners, so they can seek support to aid their learning journey. The Grade 6 teachers are looking forward to building on the important values of self-awareness, independence, organisation and initiative throughout the year.

Congratulations to the student representatives that were elected as House Captains and Junior School Council members as part of the Grade 6 leadership body. We would also like to acknowledge those students who have volunteered to assist with additional extra-curricular leadership roles, including managing the Grade Prep Buddy Program and speaking at assemblies. We know these students will represent the school at a high standard as they demonstrate positive decision making and self-awareness. It is important that all our Grade 6 students continue to show these attributes as they are role models for the rest of our school. It has been brilliant to see all the students wear their new distinctive red hoodies and t-shirts with excitement and pride!

ENGLISH
In Reading, the students will continue to refine their ability to use a range of reading strategies independently. It is expected that students have engaged in sustained reading over the holiday period. This term, we will continue to delve into the facets of the reading process to enhance their understandings, whilst maintaining a love for reading by utilising our expansive classroom library. We will be working towards students further developing their ability to identify and articulate the skills they are using while they read, including inferring, analysing, critiquing and summarising. At home, you can continue to support your child by engaging in rich discussions around the texts they are reading. We suggest reading the same text in your own time, jumping ahead so you are informed of the plot, character traits and themes within the story. At the senior level, we place significant importance on the discussions about texts, and not simply listening to your child read aloud.

In Writing, students will continue to engage their passion for writing as part of the Writer’s Workshop. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different text structures and language features they have come across in the reading and include it in their own writing. A spelling focus on understanding how to use banks of known words, word origins, base words, prefixes, suffixes, spelling patterns and generalisations to spell new words will also be included weekly as part of the writing program. Should you wish to support your child at home, you may like to focus on supporting them to correctly select and use various forms of punctuation, particularly when editing their writing. We would also love to see students focusing on quality over quantity – short, sharp, well written pieces are a great start. Help your child to select a text type (narrative, procedure, exposition etc.) and encourage the use of interesting sentence structures and complex vocabulary.

NUMERACY
In Mathematics, the students are applying their skills to solve more advanced mathematical problems. The focus this term will be on problem solving strategies and real—life problems involving multiplication, division, measurement and time. This will include using a wide variety of strategies which will be discussed in differentiated groups and whole group settings. Students will explore these concepts through project-based learning and open ended questions, which will cater for and extend, the diverse range of learners in the classroom.

At this level we expect that most students know their times tables (1-12) and can recall these quickly. In addition to this, the knowledge of basic number facts (across all areas of Maths) is also expected (eg. 35-9=, 48÷6=, 10% of $500, 2/5 of $15).

We ask that families assist Maths learning at home by encouraging children to play games involving counting, money, time and number facts. Please ensure your child has access to Essential Assessment on a regular basis as this supports the learning in our classroom.

INQUIRY
Throughout Term 2, as part of our Inquiry Unit - ‘Australia- Government, Law and Democracy,’ students will explore the roles and responsibilities of the three levels of government. Students will spend time researching the fundamentals of government and law making through a range of inquiry based tasks, including classroom role plays. The unit will culminate with a virtual excursion to Victorian Parliament and the Old Treasury Building.

The iPads will continue to be used daily, therefore it is imperative that these are at school and fully charged every day.

HOMEWORK
Research has found that regular reading and rehearsal of Maths concepts (including times tables) greatly contributes to ongoing improvement in results and student engagement. We ask you to continue your support in ensuring that homework is completed regularly and handed in on the due dates. It is expected that students read at home (minimum of 4 days for at least 20 minutes) and complete at least 40 minutes of Essential Assessment or Hit the Button practise or approved math's specific tasks on a weekly basis. This is in line with the LLPS homework policy distributed earlier this year.

DEVICES
A reminder that Department of Education policy stipulates that phones, watches or other devices with communicative ability cannot be carried by students while on the school premises during school hours, without Principal approval. For further details please refer to the policy documents on Compass and the Lara Lake PS website.

We are proud of the students’ attitudes and successes from Term 1 and look forward to the students continuing to push themselves whilst maintaining the high expectations they displayed in Term 1.
